Description: "Shadow area" means any area in which underground mine workings are approved under a permit. This area includes all resources above and below the coal that are protected by the State Act that may be adversely impacted by underground mining operations including impacts of subsidence With statutory authority derived from the 1977 Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) and equivalent state legislation, the IDNR Office of Mines and Minerals Land Reclamation Division receives maps and other documents from coal mine operators to monitor compliance.
