Abstract:

This dataset contains well locations and other information for the groundwater-monitoring wells associated with Illinois coal mining permits. Well locations are derived from engineering scale paper maps received from coal mine operators. The Illinois State Water Survey did much of the early digitizing work for this dataset, and the Land Reclamation Division of the Office of Mines and Minerals continues to update it as new wells are completed. Attributes for each well include mining unit, permit number, pit name, and well ID code.

Purpose:

To show locations of groundwater-monitoring wells, and to indicate whether (item 'flag' = 1) or not (item 'flag' = 0) the well can be linked to records in the the groundwater-chemistry database though the unique well identification item 'unitid'

Supplemental_Information:

The attribute item 'id' is adequate for specifying a well within a given mining unit, but other units may have wells with the same 'id' value. The combined item 'unitid' is necessary to uniquely identify a well for linking to the statewide groundwater-chemistry database which is maintained by LRD staff. This unique identifier was created by merging the values of 'unit' and 'id' into a single new attribute without a space or other delimiter between them.
